“Most of us don’t think twice about breathing. For those diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, this necessity of life can be a daily struggle.

“Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that causes an accumulation of mucus in the lungs, digestive tract and other areas of the body. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, a persistent cough, frequent chest infections and weight loss.

“During the month of May, we recognize the struggles associated with cystic fibrosis and offer our compassion to Albertans living with this hereditary condition.

“With about 600 Albertans living with this debilitating disease, diagnosis and treatment are key factors in helping them to live longer and healthier lives.

“Alberta has been a leader in cystic fibrosis care. Many years ago, Alberta became the first province to screen newborns for this genetic condition.

“More recently, Alberta was among the first provinces and territories to provide broad access to Trikafta, enabling most Albertans living with cystic fibrosis to begin treatment with this effective new drug.

“This month, I encourage you to learn more about cystic fibrosis and to give your time and support to Albertans living with this condition.”
