“World Asthma Day raises awareness of the almost 550,000 Albertans living with the chronic inflammatory disease that causes the airways to become tightened, narrowed and swollen.

“Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood and the leading cause of hospitalization in children. It affects more than three million Canadians, including 850,000 children under the age of 14.

While asthma cannot be cured, it can be managed with proper treatment so people with asthma can lead normal, active lives.

“Alberta’s government continues its commitment to providing drug treatments and other services to help those with asthma manage their symptoms and improve their well-being.

“On World Asthma Day, I encourage you to learn more about the disease and how it affects your friends and loved ones. It is an opportunity to share information with others and to come together to help improve the lives of those with asthma.”
