“March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. My thoughts are with Albertans who are living with colorectal cancer, their families and friends.
“Colorectal cancer develops from abnormal cells that grow together and form polyps. This cancer is also called colon or rectal cancer, depending on where it develops. It is the fourth most common form of cancer diagnosed in the province.
“According to Colorectal Cancer Canada, almost 10,000 Canadians died last year of colorectal cancer. Their loss is particularly tragic given colorectal cancer is preventable and treatable with early detection.
“Find out your risks of developing colorectal cancer by using this risk calculator.
“I encourage Albertans to learn more about colorectal cancer at Healthier Together and take steps to prevent and detect colorectal cancer before it spreads.
“Find out how to book a screening test at Screening for Life or speak with your family doctor. Annual screening is recommended for everyone aged 50 to 74, but your doctor may recommend testing more frequently or at a younger age.
“With early detection, colorectal cancer can usually be treated successfully.”
