“March 26 is Purple Day, an opportunity to wear purple to show your support and understanding for the one in 100 Canadians who live with epilepsy, a common neurological disorder that causes recurring seizures.

“Purple Day was founded in 2008 by Cassidy Megan, then a nine year old from Nova Scotia, who wanted people to know that if you have epilepsy, you are not alone. In 2021, the federal government passed The Purple Day Act, declaring March 26 the official day for epilepsy awareness in Canada. Purple Day is now recognized globally.

“Alberta is working to improve access to highly specialized epilepsy treatment and supports through centres offering care from teams of health providers. The cause of epilepsy is unknown, but seizures can be controlled or reduced with treatment.

“Please show your support for those living with epilepsy and their families by wearing purple today. Learn more and raise awareness and understanding so adults and children who live with epilepsy are not isolated but empowered to participate fully in their school, work, community and recreational lives.

“For epilepsy services and support for patients and families, please reach out to the Epilepsy Association of Calgary at 403-230-2764 or the Edmonton Epilepsy Association at 780-488-9600.”
