“Around the world, the last day of February is recognized as Rare Disease Day. Rare diseases affect thousands of individuals, many of whom are children.

“I wish to acknowledge patients across Alberta who struggle with the many challenges of living with a rare disease, and their families who support, care and advocate for them.

“Because they are uncommon, rare diseases may require patients and their families to endure months or years of medical consultation before a diagnosis can be reached. The journey to a diagnosis can be heartbreaking and exhausting.

“For a small fraction of diagnosed patients, promising drug treatments may be available. For others, the search for hope and effective treatments will continue. Alberta’s government will continue to look for opportunities to help more Albertans with rare diseases improve their quality of life by working collaboratively with federal, provincial and territorial partners to expand access to more evidence-based treatments.

“Please join me in recognizing and thanking the many dedicated medical practitioners, researchers and caregivers across Alberta who provide compassionate care to those living with rare diseases so they have the best quality of life possible, and hope for advances in detection, treatment and cures.”
