“Today, Muslim Albertans are welcoming the dawn of a new year on the Islamic calendar.

“As they gather to tell the story of Muhammad’s escape to Mecca in search of religious liberty, Muslims reflect on faith, freedom and their own mortality.

“This day offers the opportunity to reaffirm spiritual commitments and build community bonds. With the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic behind us, Albertans of faith are once again able to gather without restriction.

“We have a strong and cherished Muslim presence in our province. Religious freedom is dear to Albertans, and we will continue to stand with our Muslim friends and neighbours who deserve to live and worship in peace.

“I wish all who celebrate a blessed new year.”
