“From the formation of the North West Mounted Police up till today’s sophisticated RCMP and municipal police forces, police and peace officers have dedicated themselves to public safety and the rule of law.

“In the course of duty, police and peace officers have given aid to people in need and confronted violence from others, all in the service of the communities in which they and their own families live. They are highly trained, carefully scrutinized and always at personal risk.

“Sadly, since the first officer death in 1876, a total of 100 men and women serving to protect us have fallen in the line of duty. We are eternally grateful for their courage and their service.

“On this day, let us remember the fallen, stand with the families and loved ones who carry on in their memories and give honour and respect to those who risk their lives every day to protect us.”
