River levels on the Peace River at the Town of Peace River will be rising in response to the approaching ice front. The formation of a river ice cover during winter freeze-up will result in a gradual increase in water levels. As the ice cover forms, ice jams can occur which may result in rapidly changing water levels

The ice front on the Peace River was located 1.8 km downstream of the Hwy 2 bridge in the morning of January 22. It is expected that the ice front will advance through the Town later in the day or overnight on January 22. When freeze-up occurs at the Town, it is typical for the water level to rise between 2.5 to 3.5 m. This is a routine advisory and no problems are expected at the Town of Peace River. However, there is potential for ice movement and shoving of the ice cover as it advances upstream, which could result in rapid fluctuations of the water level in the area.

Action to take:

• Be cautious of the rising water levels and take appropriate precautionary measures.
