“Today we are establishing the authority of the five commissioners to examine areas of provincial jurisdiction, such as child welfare, education and the justice system – to understand and address causes leading to missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

“We are thankful to the families who, for many years, advocated, held marches across the country, and pushed with heart and courage to make this national inquiry a reality.

“The political will of our nation has caught up with the will of the families and it is vital that their voices continue to be central to this inquiry as it progresses over the next two years.

“Our work together, across jurisdictions, must result in meaningful actions, leading to real solutions for the safety and security of Indigenous women and girls across Alberta and Canada.”
