“The province is proud to have the Cold Lake First Nations contribute to the English Bay Provincial Recreation Area redevelopment. Together, we will create a premier recreation destination for Albertans that incorporates the rich cultural and heritage of the area’s Indigenous people.”
The first phase of the project, starting this month, will include the refurbishment of two camping loops in the south campground (47 stalls), a new access road and the expansion of the boat launch parking lot. Future plans include development of educational programming and interpretive signage in collaboration with the CLFN that will reflect their cultural significance and history to the land and region.
The first phase of the project is scheduled to be complete this August and will be marked by a grand opening event.
The project will eventually include 120 modern campsites, improvements to the day-use area, a playground and washrooms at a cost of $3 million. The scheduled completion date is the spring of 2017.
In addition to interpretive programming, CLFN summer employees will participate in construction and the council will also contribute to dual-language visitor signage that will be installed at English Bay.
