This release was issued under a previous government.

The grants, announced on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, will be allocated for year two of the three-year, $3-million Taking Action Against Elder Abuse Co-ordinated Community Response program.

The recipients will work in many ways to address elder abuse, including increasing the co-ordination of social workers, medical professionals, seniors groups and local police for a more community-based response.

An additional $300,000 grant over three years will help the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Network improve its awareness-raising efforts and support the activities of the network.

“In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I am pleased to award grants that will help communities address and prevent elder abuse. All Albertans have a role to play in eliminating elder abuse and our government is doing our part.”

Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing

“We are so grateful for this funding announcement, as it gives us a greater ability to collaborate with communities and service providers across Alberta to enhance the great work that is being done to raise awareness and address elder abuse.”

Shantel Ottenbreit, Chair, Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Network, Community Resource Worker, City of Medicine Hat
