This release was issued under a previous government.

Albertans have three free and easy ways to remember to renew their driver’s licences, identification cards and vehicle registrations in time:

  1. Sign up for a free reminder from one of the following:
  2. Visit your local registry agent to sign up for an email reminder.
  3. Check your licence plate, vehicle registration or driver’s licence and mark the expiry dates in your calendar.

Albertans can also use this handy chart to see which month their car registrations will expire. It is based on surname or company name.

“As motorists are responsible for ensuring their car registration, insurance and driver’s licence are current, it is important that everyone chooses an option that best suits their lifestyle so renewal dates don’t slip by unnoticed. More than 650,000 Albertans are already signed up for one of these services.”

Stephanie McLean, Minister of Service Alberta

On April 1, 2016, Government of Alberta modernized its reminder system by switching from courtesy mailed reminders to electronic reminders. This switch saves taxpayers $3 million every year.

Albertans with disabilities* will continue to receive reminders in the mail, and seniors over the age of 70 will receive reminders until April 17, 2017.

*Editor's note added Oct 3, 2016 for clarity: Albertans holding parking placards for persons with disabilities or disabled licence plates will continue receiving renewal reminders through the mail.
