This release was issued under a previous government.

“Midwives give expecting mothers an alternative option that is safe, compassionate and effective. This government recognizes the excellent and efficient care that midwives provide. I’m very proud that this government has expanded midwifery care in Alberta. Over the coming days, Associate Minister Brandy Payne and myself are meeting with advocacy groups and the Alberta Association of Midwives. We have a lot to talk about, and I know we share a desire to work together.”

Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health

In September 2015, the Government of Alberta increased funding for midwifery by $1.8 million, enough to support an additional 400 courses of care and bringing the total number of publicly supported births by midwives to approximately 2,774.

“In these economic times, Albertans rightly expect us to be careful stewards of health resources, and I believe midwives and expecting parents will have something to look forward to as we prepare for our next budget.”

Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health

“The Alberta Association of Midwives is encouraged by Minister Hoffman’s remarks that her government values and is committed to growing midwifery. We look forward to meeting with Minister Hoffman and discussing how to meet the strong demand from expecting mothers in a way that supports midwives and most importantly, serves pregnant women and their babies.”

Nicole Matheson, President, Alberta Association of Midwives

“It has been very encouraging to work with this government. They have demonstrated they want to be good partners and work together on behalf of Albertans to improve access to midwives across the province.”

Dana Weatherhead, President, Association for Safe Alternatives in Childbirth
