On Saturday, March 19, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. non-essential lighting and electronic equipment will be shut down in government buildings across the province as part of the global observance of Earth Hour.
“Our government has committed to being a good environmental steward through policy and action. But we can all take small steps to make a difference. Earth Hour is a great visual reminder of the small things we can each do every day to reduce the amount of energy our province consumes.”
Lights will remain off for one hour at Government Centre in Edmonton, the Calgary Courts Centre and other select government facilities in the following communities (number of participating facilities in brackets):

Beyond the symbolic gesture for Earth Hour, the Alberta government regularly turns off non-essential lights evenings and weekends at the majority of government owned-buildings. Reducing government’s energy consumption is a key component of Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan.
Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are encouraged to turn off their lights for one hour to show support for environmentally sustainable action.
