As a result of a year-long investigation, the Consumer Investigation Unit of Service Alberta has laid 180 regulatory charges against Calgary-based home renovation companies The Remodelers Ltd. and The Remodelers Special Projects Ltd. Both companies are owned by Bruce Maxwell Hopkins, who is also charged under the regulations.

In November 2014, Service Alberta received complaints from 27 individuals following the bankruptcy of The Remodelers Ltd. and The Remodelers Special Projects Ltd. Of the 27 initial complaints, 22 have resulted in charges.

The financial losses incurred by the 22 complainants total approximately $5 million. Charges include: operating without a pre-paid contractor license, misleading consumers and failing to provide refunds. If found guilty, Hopkins could face up to a two-year jail sentence or a significant financial penalty.
