Overview

Alberta's Correctional Services Division is responsible for the custody, supervision and rehabilitation of adults and young persons under provincial correctional authority in Alberta. The division operates 8 adult and 2 young offender correctional centres and supports over 40 probation offices across the province.

Correctional Services creates a better Alberta by supporting, guiding and inspiring our clients to make positive, sustainable and lawful choices.

Roles within corrections

Through custody and community based supervision, Correctional Services staff provide accountability, rehabilitation programming and evidence based practices that help individuals make positive changes while enhancing public safety provincewide.

Corrections staff serve in 3 key areas:

  • Correctional peace officers

    Correctional peace officers play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of individuals in correctional, remand and young offender centres.

    Core responsibilities:

    • monitor inmate movement, conduct patrols and maintain safe living units
    • manage behaviour, de‑escalate situations and act as a positive role model
    • perform searches, safety checks and other security procedures
    • complete reports, documentation and other duty requirements
    • build professional relationships and support rehabilitation efforts
  • Correctional service workers

    Correctional service workers provide case planning, supervision, security and support services for people in provincial correctional centres.

    Core responsibilities:

    • determine appropriate client placements by assessing risks and needs
    • monitor living units, observe interactions and de‑escalate and resolve conflicts
    • connect clients to supports through custody programs and release planning, and promote constructive activities
    • coordinate support services with centre staff and community partners
    • prepare accurate casework records and reports for centre and court use
  • Probation officers

    Probation officers support clients to work toward rehabilitation in a community setting by assessing their needs, supervising them under court orders and supporting accountability and positive change.

    Core responsibilities:

    • assess client risks, needs and motivations to guide case planning
    • engage with client supports to promote stability and progress
    • provide interventions that help reduce criminal behaviour
    • engage with community partners and collateral contacts
    • prepare written reports for court and ongoing case planning

Recruitment process

There is a 4-step process to working with Alberta Correctional Services in the roles listed above:

  • Step 1. Submit your application

    When we are hiring, apply for a position at the Government of Alberta jobs website.

    • Along with a resume and cover letter, you may need to submit copies of other documents when applying. Requirements vary according to the specific position, so ensure you review the posting carefully.

    After submitting your resume and the requisite documents, if you meet the job requirements and are selected for an interview, you will be contacted.

  • Step 2. Interviews and assessments

    Selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. Some roles may require completion of a virtual screening interview in advance of an interview with the hiring panel, and/or the completion of a written assignment. For front-line roles within a custody setting (correctional peace officer and correctional service worker roles), you will also be required to complete an assessment of physical abilities relevant to the job.

    • If selected for an interview, you will be required to provide 3 references:
      • current or past supervisory references are required, including from your current or most recent employer.
  • Step 3. Final document submission and verification

    After your interview, we may:

    • check all your references
    • verify your academic credentials
    • request a certified criminal record check (fingerprint-based criminal record check), if not already submitted
    • request and verify other documentation required for the role (for example: first aid/CPR; drivers’ abstract)
  • Step 4. Offer of employment

    Upon acceptance of a verbal offer, you will receive a written offer letter outlining the conditions of your employment.

    For some roles, completion of a mandatory in-person orientation session is a requirement for continued employment. If the role for which you have applied requires an orientation component, you will be notified of upcoming dates as part of the offer process.

Training

Correctional Services Induction Training (CSIT) is delivered by our training academy and provides new recruits with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their roles.

Correctional peace officer and correctional service worker – recruits complete a 7-week, paid, full time training program focused on inmate management and security skills in a custodial setting.

Probation officer – recruits complete a 4-week, paid, full-time program focused on effective casework and community supervision practices.
