Overview

Alberta's environmental leadership empowers industries to reduce emissions and invest in innovation that will help the province reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

With support from the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction fund, we're investing in innovative, clean technology and emissions-reduction programs.

Lowering emissions and enabling innovation

    Energy development initiatives

A number of action plans and strategies are helping Alberta reduce emissions and produce clean energy to meet its environmental goals.

  • Hydrogen Roadmap

The Hydrogen Roadmap is building a provincial hydrogen economy and accessing global markets. Beyond producing clean hydrogen, Alberta has the opportunity to reduce emissions by integrating clean hydrogen across our economy.

  • Natural Gas Vision and Strategy

The Natural Gas Vision and Strategy takes action for Alberta to become the preferred source of clean, responsibly-sourced natural gas and related products, including hydrogen, petrochemicals and recycled plastics. This includes tapping into our technologically advanced and innovative sectors driving ground-breaking emissions-reduction technology like carbon capture, utilization and storage.

  • Minerals Strategy and Action Plan

The Minerals Strategy and Action Plan provides the opportunity to be at the forefront of global mineral exploration and development. The province is home to vast geological potential and an experienced workforce, and has the necessary infrastructure in place to support a growing minerals sector.

  • A Strategic Plan For The Deployment of Small Modular Reactors

Sets out a strategic plan for the potential use and deployment of small modular nuclear reactors by Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Brunswick. The plan is the final deliverable under an inter-provincial memorandum of understanding among the four provinces.

  • Environmental Social Governance Secretariat

The Environmental Social Governance Secretariat serves to position Alberta as a global ESG leader for clean, secure and ethically sourced energy.

  • Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan

The Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan outlines and expands on Alberta’s practical and proven approach to emissions management and climate policy, and ensures that Alberta remains a responsible producer of reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. It is being implemented across the province.

  • Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction System

Our Alberta-made, industry-funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) system.

Between 2009 and 2021, $2.5 billion from industrial carbon pricing has been invested in emissions reduction programs. Another $800 million from the TIER fund is being invested over the next 3 years for projects and programs that are supporting jobs, cutting emissions and keeping businesses competitive.

  • Additional projects

    • Further development of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and other technologies, in addition to the $1.9 billion invested or committed to CCUS projects to date.
    • An internationally-recognized methane emissions management framework.

    Partnerships

Thanks to funding from the Government of Alberta, key partnerships are delivering innovative, clean technology and emissions-reduction programs to help meet our environmental goals.

  • Alberta Innovates

Funded by the Government of Alberta, Alberta Innovates provides funding, business advice and connections, applied research and industrial testing facilities to accelerate research and innovation that benefits Albertans.

As the province’s most comprehensive research and innovation agency, Alberta Innovates is uniquely positioned to propel great ideas forward and improve the lives of Albertans today and for generations to come.

  • Emissions Reduction Alberta

Funded by the Government of Alberta, Emissions Reduction Alberta delivers on the province’s environmental and economic goals.

The organization uses funding from the industrial carbon price, currently called the TIER fund, to take action on climate change and support economic growth by investing in the pilot, demonstration and deployment of clean technology solutions that reduce emissions, lower costs, attract investment, and create jobs in Alberta.

  • Municipal Climate Change Action Centre

Funded by the Government of Alberta, the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre provides funding, technical assistance and education to municipalities, schools, and community organizations, helping them lower energy costs, reduce emissions, and improve climate resilience.
