Calgary Forest Area - April 25, 2025

High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) is now high. It is important to note that the danger remains low to moderate in much of the forested and mountain regions where snow remains on the ground. The risk over the coming days is in the open and exposed areas, with forecasted warmer temperatures and anticipated winds. Any wildfires that ignite in these conditions have the potential to grow quickly and be difficult to contain if they are spreading through dead and dry grass.

Hazard reduction burning

Wildland firefighters from the CFA took advantage of optimal conditions and completed some hazard reduction burning near our Elbow fire base. Close to two hectares of grass was burned, removing it as potential fuel for fast moving wildfires. Spring is an opportunity to safely and effectively conduct these projects and remove hazardous fuels from around structures and communities.  Removing it now could help us later in the season. Conditions will be monitored over the coming days and additional projects may be started.

A wildland firefighter from the CFA is burning away dead and dry vegetation under ideal conditions on April 19. This thick, matted grass and shrubs could fuel a fast moving wildfire and by removing it now, we are reducing the risk to nearby structures and forests.

Wildfires in the CFA

There are currently no active wildfires in the forest area. 

Since January 1, the CFA has responded to 10 wildfires which have burned 26.34 hectares.

Fire permits required

A reminder that fire permits are required for any burning, except campfires, in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.  Fire permits are free and can be requested from the Calgary Forest Area main office by calling 403-297-8800 or requested online.

Wildfire season runs March 1 – October 31.

Get a fire permit

From March 1 to October 31, all burning activities in the Forest Protection Area, excluding campfires, require a fire permit.

Safe burning

Prevent wildfires by checking on winter burn sites.  Winter burns can smoulder underground and often reignite in the spring. Extinguish a fire by soaking it, stirring it, and soaking it again.
