Help from Red Cross

For people who have returned back to the Wood Buffalo region, a Red Cross office has been set up in Fort McMurray and is located at 10019B Franklin Avenue. Residents of the Wood Buffalo region who have unmet needs due to the fires, please book an appointment before visiting the Red Cross office.

Appointments can be booked in advance by calling 1-888-553-5505.

If you have just returned to the community and still need to check in for re-entry, please visit the Future Forward Place prior to booking an appointment.

Alberta Works Emergency Needs Allowance

Emergency benefits may be available for eligible Albertans to meet immediate daily needs.

Alberta Works

Alberta Works provides financial support for basic living expenses, as well as career and employment services to help Albertans find a job. Visit an Alberta Works Centre near you during regular business hours to find out more.

Emergency Child Care Subsidy

Eligible families can apply for an Emergency Child Care Subsidy to assist with the cost of licensed or approved child care for children under 12 and not yet in Grade 7. You, your partner, or the child receiving care must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a temporary foreign worker; and you must be registered with the Red Cross and unable to reside in your home due to the wildfire.

Student loans

Alberta student loan payments for Wood Buffalo students affected by the wildfire, including recent graduates, will be deferred until March 1, 2017, interest free.

The repayment and interest-free period extension is for Alberta student loans only. Students with Canada student loans are advised to contact the National Student Loans Service Centre to discuss repayment options.

Tax Relief

Tax relief measures are now in place for individuals, businesses and first responders who unable to file or pay taxes on time. Call a designated Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) telephone agent to request taxpayer relief or get advice on lost, destroyed or damaged records at:
