Evaluators need to understand why the job exists, determine the focus of the work and have a sound understanding of the job responsibilities, then assess it against the:
- stream definitions for each Subsidiary work group by considering the stream descriptor in its entirety rather than isolated phrases
- guide charts
- benchmark jobs developed for each Subsidiary and Stream, which identify the number of levels and characterize the difference between the work in each level in a Stream
In some cases, it may be necessary to assess the work by using the guide charts and benchmarks for the management plan.
The following questions can be used as a guide:
- Which Subsidiary and Stream do the job responsibilities fall within?
- What is the rating?
- Which benchmark job aligns with the kind and level of work?
- Where appropriate, do the job responsibilities compare to the Management Job Evaluation Plan and the benchmarks?
Work currently performed within the Technical, General and Field Services component of the Government of Alberta has been evaluated using a point rating system. To assess whether a job falls within the Technical, General and Field Services component, consider the type of work performed. Determine the focus of the job: why does the job exist? Once you have clarified the job's purpose, determine whether the job belongs in this Subsidiary and, if so, in which Stream. Seven groupings have been recognized in the Technical, General and Field Services component of the Alberta Public Service. These are:
Work is focused on the delivery of janitorial services including cleaning and basic maintenance work (for example, snow and/or garbage removal) at government owned or occupied buildings.

This work involves the operation of computer and associated peripheral equipment in a medium to large scale data processing installation. To ensure the continuing operation of the data processing centre, jobs monitor system activity and respond to computer signals or messages indicating a variety of hardware and software problems.

This work is primarily involved in the supervision or operation of light to medium equipment (for example, maintenance, construction, transport, agricultural, etc.) or the operation of vehicles for the transportation of materials, merchandise, equipment and passengers.

Work involves the operation of government sites (typically outdoor premises) including responsibilities for grounds maintenance or skilled horticultural work which may include propagation and care of plants, shrubbery and vegetable crops and/or greenhouse responsibilities.

Information and Creative Technical Services
This stream includes technical work in the collection, maintenance and distribution of information in various physical formats (for example, books, audio visual, serials). This stream also includes the provision of creative and/or cultural technical services in support of government programs.
This work involves planning, design, preparation, and/or production of educational materials, cultural and/or historical exhibits, displays, pictures, graphics, photographs, etc., preparation of documentary collections or the operation of technical equipment in creative disciplines.

Work primarily involves skilled technical work in support of government programs. The technical work may be conducted in laboratory, field or office settings. Work in this stream may include such fields as agriculture, agronomy, engineering, environment, cartography, surveying, pathology, toxicology and water management.
Other jobs focus on the installation, repair, maintenance and modification of technical systems such as electronic and/or communications systems or are responsible for supervising the servicing, operations and maintenance of government structures or buildings and their technical systems.
