Strategic Research Initiatives
Supports innovation excellence through discovery, applied and translational research initiatives by Alberta's post-seondary institutions.
Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) support innovation excellence of strategic value to Alberta through discovery, applied and translational research initiatives in Alberta's post-secondary institutions and research centres. SRI investments will train qualified professionals to increase innovation capacity and facilitate economic growth and diversification in Alberta.
- Current stream
- Major Innovation Fund (MIF): Supports research and innovation investments of strategic interest, where commercialization or adoption of the results resolves critical gaps in existing technology or identifies clear benefits in Alberta's target areas, as identified in the Alberta Research and Innovation Framework (ARIF).
- Previous streams
- Campus Alberta Innovation Program (CAIP): Facilitated the attraction and recruitment of leading edge faculty and related research personnel (e.g., graduate students, post-doctoral fellows) in Alberta’s target areas of existing or emerging research and innovation.
- Regional and National Research Centres: Internationally leveraged investments in the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). Collectively, these initiatives support advanced training opportunities, convene the world’s best researchers in the province, and build bridges between research communities and industry.
