Overview
The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards recognize extraordinary Albertans whose volunteer efforts have contributed to the well-being of their community and fellow community members.
Youth, adult and senior categories
Two awards are given annually on or around International Volunteer Day, December 5, in these categories:
- youth (up to 24 years old)
- adult
- senior
Breaking Barriers category
The Breaking Barriers category recognizes exceptional volunteers who are working to create communities that are diverse and inclusive.
Three awards will be presented to individuals who volunteer in these areas:
- addressing racism
- advocating for 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusion
- fighting gender discrimination

How to nominate someone
Step 1. Fill out the form
2023 Stars of Alberta nomination form
Step 2. Gather your documents
Your nomination submission for the 2023 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards must include the following documents:
- completed nomination form signed by the nominator
- letter of nomination that includes the critical information outlined on page 3 of the nomination form
- letter of consent signed by the nominee
- 1 or 2 letters of reference to strengthen the nomination – optional
Step 3. Submit the application

Eligibility
Only one category may be selected for each nomination.
Nominations must be for outstanding achievements of individuals in the designated category – group nominations will not be accepted.
Youth, adult and senior categories
Albertans are eligible for a Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award – in the youth, adult or senior categories – if they:
- exemplify the spirit of community service
- demonstrate exemplary initiative, leadership and creativity in their service to others
- serve as a role model for others in their community
- inspire others to engage in volunteer service
- improve the overall quality of life of fellow Albertans and community as a whole
Breaking Barriers category
Albertans are eligible for a Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award – in the Breaking Barriers category – if they:
- address racism or reduce barriers for racialized communities
- increase and promote intercultural understanding and trust between communities
- promote 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusion or address barriers for 2SLGBTQQIA+ people
- fight gender discrimination and reduce barriers for women, girls and gender-diverse people
