Seniors’ Week has been recognized since 1986 to celebrate and recognize the contributions seniors make to enhance the quality of life in Alberta. Seniors’ Week was inspired by the vision of the late Alice Modin. 38 years ago, Modin began a campaign to start a seniors’ day in Strathcona County that helped pave the way for this annual event.

The week of festivities is kicked off with a provincial launch event hosted by the Alberta government with a community or organization.

Provincial launch host

Expression of interest applications to host in 2024 are now closed. The host for Seniors' Week 2024 will be announced at a later date.

Each year, the Government of Alberta chooses an organization or community to co-host the provincial launch event for Seniors’ Week. Municipalities, Indigenous communities, and senior serving organizations can apply to co-host the 2024 Seniors’ Week Provincial Launch Event.

In 2023, the Town of Okotoks kicked off Seniors’ Week with an event on June 5, 2023. Throughout the day, over 500 attendees and volunteers of all ages came together to celebrate older adults, which is a testament to the community wide appreciation of older adults.
