Overview
You must renew your driving instructor licence every 24 months. You will receive a renewal notice 3 months prior to the date your driving instructor licence expires. You can renew your driving instructor licence if you meet all requirements.
Requirements
To renew a driving instructor’s licence, you must submit the following to MELT and Licensing Standards (MLS):
- a completed Driving Instructor Licence Application form (DPLS0045)
- the form must be signed by the senior driving instructor or authorized representative from the licensed driver training school
- a record of exact hours of instruction completed during the 24 months before the renewal date
- a completed Licensed Driving Instructor Record of Instruction form (DPLS0027) (PDF, 111 KB) if you are an instructor for Class 1, Experience and Equivalency Class 1, 2, 2-S, 3, 5 and 6, Q endorsement, S endorsement, Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC), or Defensive Driving Course (DDC)
- a signed Driving Instructor Code of Conduct and Ethics
- Driving Instructor Code of Conduct and Ethics (PDF, 676 KB)
- Senior Driving Instructor Code of Conduct and Ethics (PDF, 80 KB)
- proof of payment for the licence renewal fee (if applicable)
- an original Criminal Record Check from an approved police agency dated within 90 days of the application
Hours of instruction requirements
You must complete a minimum number of hours of instruction in the 24 months before the renewal date. See section 3.00.02 of the Licensed Driver Training School Policies and Procedures Manual for more information.
Senior driving instructor
As a senior driving instructor, you must meet all of the requirements of a driving instructor listed above to renew your driving instructor licence. MELT and Licensing Standards will also monitor one senior driving instructor session at least once every 2 years. You must submit a signed Senior Driving Instructor Code of Conduct and Ethics (PDF, 78 KB) to MLS.
