Formerly called the Alberta Newcomer Recognition Awards, the program was renamed the Alberta Immigrant Impact Awards to better reflect its purpose – to recognize the contributions of foreign-born Albertans.
Following the call for nominations in May, Albertans submitted their choices for notable immigrants from all walks of life who have contributed to making the province a better place socially, economically and culturally.
“My heartfelt congratulations to each of the award nominees and recipients. I applaud your dedication and your passion to bettering the province and supporting your fellow Albertans. Your actions are an inspiration to all, and your efforts to better our communities are recognized and appreciated.”
Each award recipient is an Albertan who has contributed to communities across the province. The nine award categories recognize and celebrate the diverse impact of these Albertans, from career and academic achievements to leadership in Alberta’s rural communities. To qualify, nominees must have been born outside Canada but now be permanent residents or Canadian citizens.
“It is a great honor to receive an Alberta Immigrant Impact Award. I have made Canada and Alberta my home, a place to live, work, play and build community. Immigrants in Alberta bring their social capital to invest in strengthening our shared future. I am grateful for the opportunities to contribute at the University of Calgary and to serve in the community. This recognition encourages me and others like me to work for the common good of our province and country. I am most grateful for the welcome I have received, and I am committed to assisting other immigrants to find their place.”
The awards, first presented in 2022, represent the Alberta government’s ongoing commitment to supporting diversity and multiculturalism.
