On June 29, Fort McMurray RCMP received a report of a missing person. Two days later, officers located a man who they believed to be that missing person. During the interaction between the man and the officers, he was arrested. A short time later, the man ran away and an officer deployed a conducted energy weapon. The man fell to the ground and immediately began complaining of pain in his arm and shoulder. The man was assessed by emergency medical services, but no critical injuries were found.

On July 20, the man was taken to a hospital and was found to have a broken collarbone.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the arrest. No additional information will be released.

As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
