On that day at about 4:50 a.m., members of the EPS responded to a report of an armed, suicidal man inside a residence in north Edmonton. It was reported that the man was in possession of a firearm, had expressed suicidal thoughts to others, and had posted similar comments and images to social media. EPS members, including the Tactical Unit, attended to the location of the residence along with a negotiator, who succeeded in making contact with the man.

At about 7:20 a.m., with negotiations still ongoing, the man exited the residence, at which time a confrontation occurred between the man and police. During that confrontation, police deployed a non-lethal distraction device. As the confrontation continued, two members of the Tactical Unit discharged their service firearms, striking the man several times, causing him serious injury. Emergency Medical Services provided care to the man and ultimately transported him to Royal Alexandra Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

A knife and a 9-mm Glock handgun were recovered from the scene of the shooting.
