At about 4:13 a.m., EPS officers responded to a complaint of a disturbance in the area of 62 Avenue and 178 Street where a group of people were reportedly fighting, including one individual who was armed with a knife. Before the police arrived, the group involved in the disturbance left the area and entered a nearby residence. Upon arrival, EPS officers contained the residence and began to call the occupants out of the residence.

A man matching the description of an individual involved in the fight emerged from the residence. A confrontation occurred between the man and police, during which physical force was used. The man was taken into custody, and it was determined that he had sustained a serious injury. EMS attended, and transported the man to the University of Alberta Hospital. Following the man’s arrest, a folding knife was recovered from the incident scene.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s arrest and the cause of his injury. With ASIRT’s investigation underway, no further information will be released at this time.
