“We are proud to declare Oct. 4 Sisters in Spirit Day to honour the memory of Indigenous women and girls who are missing or have been murdered.

“Our hearts go out to the many families and friends across Alberta and Canada who have suffered unimaginable losses. We stand with you against violence in the names of your loved ones, whose lives are forever in our memories.

“Alberta’s government hears your calls for justice for your mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts and their families. We know we have a role to play in preventing violence against Indigenous women and girls, and we are taking action.

“As a result, we established a working group of elected officials and Indigenous women with experience in violence prevention to provide recommendations on the Calls for Justice in the Final Report of the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

“We urge everyone in Alberta to join us as we work to build an Alberta where Indigenous women and girls feel safe, valued and respected, and have lives filled with hope and promise. By taking a stand and working together, we can help stop violence against all people in Alberta.”
