“Today, Buddhists in Alberta and around the world celebrate Bodhi Day. On this day, approximately 2,500 years ago, Siddhartha Guatama reached enlightenment. In that moment, as he sat under the Bodhi Tree in northeast India, he became Buddha, the ‘Awakened One’.

“In Japan, this day is called Rohatsu, which is the eighth day of the 12th month in the lunar calendar, and marks the last day of a weeklong meditation retreat. Buddhists spend the day studying the Dharma, chanting sutras and reflecting on the principles of wisdom, compassion and kindness.

“On Bodhi Day take some time to reflect and be inspired by the teachings of kindness and compassion.”
