“Violence against women and girls affects everyone. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a vital tool that encourages people to be active bystanders, shift the culture of consent and speak out against discrimination.

“This year, #16DaysofActivism commemorates important dates as well as events that shine a light on ending gender-based violence, starting on Nov. 25, the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.

“On Nov. 27, the Alberta government is proud to host a free public screening of In the Name of Your Daughter followed by a panel discussion at the Royal Alberta Museum. This documentary film explores the issues surrounding the practice of female genital mutilation and the efforts to raise awareness.

“Our campaign this year marks a sombre milestone. Dec. 6 will be the 30th anniversary of the massacre at l'École Polytechnique, where 14 women lost their lives because of gender-based violence. In Canada, we recognize its importance as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Our government will take part in public vigils across the province to honour the women we lost that day.

“The campaign ends on International Human Rights Day, reminding us that everyone has a right to live life free from fear and experience of violence.

“Our ministry will share resources throughout the campaign. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to use them, or participate at one of our events. When we educate ourselves, we become active members in ending gender-based violence.”
