“Albertans of multiple faiths are celebrating Diwali, which is also known as the Festival of Lights.

“Hindus, for example, brighten our autumnal days with candles that signify the triumph of the God Rama over the demon Ravana. At the same time, Sikhs commemorate Bandi Chhor Divas, or the Day of Liberation, marking the return of Guru Hargobind Ji. The guru was released from imprisonment and devised the freeing of 52 political prisoners. This is the most celebratory day of the year for most Albertans of South Asian origin.

“The Festival of Lights rejoices in affirming hope, relationships and the appreciation for simple joys. It is a time to donate to those in need and reflect on one’s own financial future.

“Alberta stands stronger for the Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and others who make their homes here and are part of our culture, economy and spiritual vibrancy. A joyous festival to all who celebrate. May your lights shine ever brighter.”
