“The Government of Alberta is pleased to join the Filipino community in celebrating Philippine Independence Day. After declaring its independence from Spain in 1898, the Republic of the Philippines introduced itself to the world as a free, self-governing nation.

“For nearly a century, Filipinos have played an important role in developing the province we know today. Albertans of Filipino origin have earned a reputation as people of a profound work ethic, and devotion to faith and family.

“During my tenure as federal Immigration Minister, Philippines became Canada’s top source country for immigrants for the first time in history. I was honoured during that time to welcome over 150,000 new Canadians of Filipino origin.

“It is an opportunity for us to celebrate our friends in the Philippines, and the  triumphant story of Philippine independence, but also an opportunity to thank Albertans of Filipino origin for the sacrifices they have made, and continue to make every day to make Alberta a better place.

“To all who celebrate, happy Araw ng Kalayaan!”
