“Today marks the beginning of Kwanzaa, a week-long festival celebrating pan-African culture, values and history.
“The seven principles of Kwanzaa are unity, self-determination, purpose, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, creativity and faith. While the celebration of Kwanzaa is still growing, these values have built and sustained Alberta’s black communities for many generations.
“Given our many different backgrounds, it’s more important than ever that we share our commitment to these principles. Kwanzaa is a time to rejoice in Alberta’s rich cultural diversity, the strength and contributions of African-Canadians, and celebrate a bright future.
“To everyone celebrating Kwanzaa this year, I wish you a joyful celebration, surrounded by friends and family.
