Help shine a light on Alberta’s outstanding volunteers

A provincewide search is on for Alberta’s outstanding volunteers, and people can help by nominating their own local hero for a Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award.

These awards recognize the exemplary service of volunteers whose contributions have made a lasting impact on their communities and the lives of their fellow Albertans.

“Alberta volunteers are the constant, shining stars in our province. Whether it’s helping those impacted by a sudden disaster, like the Fort McMurray wildfire, or supporting programs that make their communities stronger and the lives of their neighbours better, let’s recognize extraordinary Albertans whose volunteer efforts have contributed to the well-being of their community. Help us honour them by nominating an outstanding volunteer for a Stars of Alberta award.”

Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism

Six awards will be presented - two in each category of youth, adult and senior - at the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards ceremony to be held as part of celebrations marking International Volunteer Day on December 5.

Albertans are encouraged to submit nominations online or download the nomination form at culturetourism.alberta.ca/stars. Deadline for nominations is September 20.

Since the program began in 2000, 103 Alberta volunteers from across the province have been recognized. Past recipients of the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award were among guests invited to attend a reception held June 24 in Calgary in conjunction with the visit of The Earl and Countess of Wessex to Alberta.

The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards Program is part of the Government of Alberta’s efforts to help set a standard for service, encourage a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspire others to make volunteering a central part of their lives. Most important, it is a chance to pay tribute to Alberta’s outstanding volunteers.
