“Mr. Magidson is well suited to address the ASC’s priorities, and will provide strong and effective leadership, working in concert with the Alberta government to further strengthen our existing securities regulatory system here in Alberta and across Canada.”
“Mr. Magidson is exceptionally well qualified for the job, bringing 35 years of experience in securities, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, and governance law to the ASC. I am confident he will serve the ASC and Albertans with distinction.”
“I am honoured to be appointed Chair and CEO of the ASC. Having previously served as Chair of the Advisory Committee, I am keenly aware of the challenges and opportunities in Alberta's unique capital market system and look forward to working with the commission, the staff team and our colleagues in the Canadian Securities Administrators to ensure Alberta and Canada's capital markets are best of class."
Since 2010, Mr. Magidson has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD). Prior to joining the ICD, he was a partner for 15 years with the national law firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, first in Toronto and then for 10 years in Calgary, where he spearheaded the successful growth of the Calgary office. From 2002 to 2008, Mr. Magidson served as Chair of the ASC’s Securities Advisory Committee. From 1999 to 2000, he was seconded to the Ontario Securities Commission to serve as Director, Take-over/Issuer Bids, Mergers & Acquisitions.
Mr. Magidson will replace Mr. William Rice, QC, who retired on September 30, 2015, after serving as ASC Chair and CEO for 10 years. Vice-chair Tom Cotter, who has served as Interim Chair and CEO, will resume his duties as Vice-chair once Mr. Magidson assumes his new role in July 2016.
Mr. Magidson was chosen through a merit-based recruitment and selection process.
