Her Honour, the Honourable Lois Mitchell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, presented the 2014 Queen’s Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal to the students. The medal, which recognizes recipients’ volunteerism and leadership in their communities and schools, was awarded at Government House in Edmonton.
“These outstanding young Albertans exemplify the importance of thoughtful and engaged citizenship. Through their commitment to volunteerism and inspiring leadership, they’ve created positive change in their communities and helped strengthen the quality of life here in Alberta and around the world.”
“It takes hard work and perseverance to make a difference, whether in your own community or abroad. These young people had the courage and the passion to pursue their goals. They have helped make Alberta a better place while expanding their personal experiences. Congratulations to the recipients on their achievement.”
The Medal is awarded annually to eight Alberta students. 2014 recipients are:
- Sandon Law from Calgary
- Habba Mahal from Sturgeon County*
- Jianna Marin from Lloydminster
- Marissa Nahirney from Calgary
- Rohan Nuttall from Edmonton
- Thomas Pomerleau from Edmonton
- Elise Pullar from Calgary*
- Anna-Marie Robertson from Edmonton
The Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal and the Premier’s Citizenship Award were established in 2002 to mark the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Queen Elizabeth II.
Medal recipients are selected from among the Alberta high school students who receive the Premier’s Citizenship Award that year. Medal recipients are chosen by a selection committee of Albertans who are themselves outstanding citizens, volunteers and community members.
The award includes a letter of congratulations from the Minister of Culture and Tourism, a $5,000 cheque and a letter of commendation presented by the Lieutenant Governor.
The award program is operated in partnership between Culture and Tourism, and Innovation and Advanced Education.
* Habba Mahal was unable to attend the ceremony. Her father attended and accepted on her behalf. Elise Pullar from Calgary was also unable to attend and will receive the medal at a later date.
