“The Alberta government is committed to providing seniors with comfortable and affordable housing in their community so they can remain close to friends and family as they age. Garden Court fills an important need for independent seniors’ housing in the community, and we are delighted to see another affordable housing project open its doors to Albertans.”

Greg Weadick, Minister of Municipal Affairs

“We are proud to provide a quality affordable housing option for independent seniors in the Peace River area. Garden Court is the first stage of the Westview development area, where we hope to create a seniors’ campus with a range of housing and support options with health care facilities and services nearby. We thank the Government of Alberta and the Town of Peace River for their outstanding commitment to meeting the housing needs of the growing senior population in our area.”

Richard Walisser, Executive Director, North Peace Housing Foundation

The Alberta government provided $5 million toward Garden Court, which opened in early 2014 and provides 63 units for independent seniors. The total project cost is approximately $11.1 million, with the balance of funding coming from the North Peace Housing Foundation, municipal loans and Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding from the Town of Peace River.

Garden Court highlights:

  • 37 affordable one-bedroom suites;
  • six affordable barrier-free suites;
  • 10 market-rate one-bedroom suites; and
  • 10 market-rate two-bedroom suites.

Since 2007, the Alberta government has invested more than $1 billion to support the development of more than 12,000 affordable housing units across the province. Currently, 6,800 units are complete, and 5,300 are coming on stream in the next two years to support low-to-moderate income Albertans.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
