Cal Dallas, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations and Ken Hughes, Minister of Energy, will lead Alberta’s efforts at a meeting with lawmakers and business leaders during the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) annual summit in Anchorage, Alaska, from July 14 - 18.

Mike Allen, MLA Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo, and Wayne Cao, MLA Calgary-Fort, will also meet key U.S. legislators at the Council of State Governments Midwestern Legislative Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota, from July 14-17.

“As part of our Building Alberta plan we’re focused on opening new markets,” said Minister Dallas. “I look forward to talking about Alberta’s commitment to world-leading environmental management with our friends in the U.S.”

Energy highlights the agenda, with a panel discussion on market access and renewable energy. Minister Hughes will present a keynote address on North America’s energy security.

“Working together on solutions to energy issues with legislators from our neighbouring provinces and states is critical to diversifying markets,” said Minister Hughes.

Other topics to be discussed at the PNWER conference include water policy, invasive species, border issues, agriculture, cross-border livestock and workforce.

PNWER’s CEO, Matt Morrison, says Alberta will play a leadership role at the summit. "The PNWER Summit will bring together more than 500 key legislators and business leaders from our bi-national region to address important issues to our regional economic competitiveness. The importance of cross-border relationships cannot be underestimated, especially as important infrastructure projects, which benefit both countries, are at stake."

MLAs Allen and Cao will deliver the same messages to the Council of State Governments during its annual meeting, as well. Cross-border trade, movements of goods and upgrades of gateways within the region will be discussed.

“Alberta exports, on average, more than $75 billion dollars of products a year to the United States. A large portion of that goes to the Midwest,” said Allen. “This forum provides an opportunity to meet with decision-makers throughout the Midwest; it’s important we keep the lines of communication open with our largest trading partner to ensure there is a smooth flow of goods throughout the region.”

The total cost for both missions for two Ministers, five MLAs and staff, including travel, accommodation and meals is estimated at $36,800.

Our government was elected to keep building Alberta, to live within its means and to fight to open new markets for Alberta’s resources. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
