University of Alberta doctoral student Adam Carlson is receiving the Alberta Award for the Study of Canadian Human Rights and Multiculturalism. He will use the scholarship to further research on societal tolerance of injustice.

Rebecca Taylor, a sociology master’s student at the University of Alberta, is receiving the first Pardeep Singh Gundara Memorial Scholarship for her research into the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act (PSECA).

Every Albertan deserves to prosper and live free from discrimination,” said Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis. “I applaud students like Adam and Rebecca whose studies will help ensure Albertans continue to enjoy equal rights and opportunities.”

“These scholarship recipients are conducting important social research, which contributes to our knowledge-inspired economy and well-being of Albertans,” said Stephen Khan, Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education. “This government is committed to encouraging and rewarding student excellence in diverse areas of study. Over the last 30 years, we’ve awarded $800 million in scholarships and bursaries to almost 500,000 students.”

The scholarship program is administered by Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education’s Alberta Scholarships Program. This award was established with support from the Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund to encourage graduate studies that promote informed thinking about Canadian human rights, cultural diversity and multiculturalism. The fund is administered by the Alberta Human Rights Commission.

Scholarship application forms are available at graduate and awards offices at all Alberta post-secondary institutions, and online at www.alis.alberta.ca. The deadline for applications is February 1 each year.
