Incident Command System courses

Learn about the Incident Command System (ICS), which supports the Alberta Incident Management System (AIMS).

Overview

Alberta Incident Management System (AIMS) is the mandated incident management system with the province of Alberta. AIMS guides all levels of government, civil-society organizations (CSOs), and the private sector to work together to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from incidents. AIMS is directly supported by the Incident Command System (ICS), which specifies an organizational structure for incident management that integrates and coordinates a combination of procedures, personnel, equipment, facilities, and communications.

AIMS compliance

Under the Local Authority Emergency Management Regulation, the Managing Director of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency has prescribed the Alberta Incident Management System (AIMS) as the command, control, and coordination system to be used by local authority’s emergency management agencies. AIMS is directly supported by the Incident Command System (ICS).

As local authorities work towards fulfilling legislated training requirements, ICS certificates will be recognized as compliant with the regulation as follows:

  • Non-ICS Canada training certificates issued prior to January 1, 2020, will be considered compliant.
  • After January 1, 2020, only ICS Canada issued training certificates will be considered compliant, with the exception of AEMA I-200 Online.

See Approved ICS Alberta Providers and Certificates for more information.

Changes to the Local Authority Emergency Management Regulation have no impact on the required training pre-requisites for ICS Canada courses or training progression parameters. ICS course pre-requisite policies are established and maintained by ICS Canada.
