To access online applications, scroll down and click on the online application links. Follow the guidelines provided to complete the application. Upon submission, the electronic application is automatically sent to Carrier Services for review. Carriers will receive a confirmation email that contains a copy of the application submission, with a receipt of payment (if applicable).

Please note that review of the Safety Fitness Application may take up to 5 business days. This is expedited by ensuring you have the correct and required information submitted.

The Safety Fitness Certificate will be mailed out to the address noted on your application. If required, you may phone Carrier Services at 403-340-5444 after 5 days to inquire about your application. If application is completed and safety fitness certificate issued, an email copy will be provided.

Safety Fitness Certificate

The following commercial vehicle(s) are to comply with the requirement to obtain a Safety Fitness Certificate:

• a truck, tractor or trailer or any combination of these vehicles that has a registered gross vehicle weight of 11,794 kilograms or more, operating solely within Alberta,

• a truck, tractor or trailer or any combination of these vehicles that weighs or is registered with a gross vehicle weight of more than 4,500 kilograms that is used or intended to be used to transport goods on a highway outside of Alberta, including a farm-plated vehicle; or,

• a "bus" (including vans) that is a commercial vehicle which is originally designed for carrying 11 or more persons, including the person driving the vehicle, and that is used or intended to be used for the transportation of persons.

Change of Operating Status

A carrier with an Operating Status of:

"Federal" whose business has changed to the extent that they intend to cease conducting business outside of Alberta may request that their Operating Status be changed to "Provincial".

"Provincial" who now intends to operate outside of Alberta must apply for a "Federal" Operating Status prior to leaving Alberta.

Name Change

Where a corporate name or surname has changed, the carrier is required to amend the name on their current Safety Fitness Certificate and/or Operating Authority Certificate.

Online payment

The filing fee for online applications must be paid by Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. For credit card payments processed online, the applicant enters their cardholder data through a secure payment page powered by TD Merchant Services.

Paper application submission

Printed copies of applications will be accepted by email, fax, or mail. For applications not submitted online, the filing fee may be paid by credit card, "On-account (if a carrier has a valid account with Alberta Transportation), cash, money order, or cheque made payable to the "Government of Alberta". As of December 31, 2013, Alberta Transportation has changed the process for accepting credit cards to protect the security of cardholder data and comply with Payment Card Industry (PCI) requirements. If you intend to submit a paper application, you cannot include your credit card number on the application.
