Important dates

The nomination period for the 2019 Great Kids Award is now open! Nominations close at 4 PM on November 30, 2018.

Overview

The Great Kids Award honours children and youth who inspire and change the lives of others, and help to build stronger communities. These great kids exemplify the qualities of resiliency, leadership, determination and strength, and have often overcome a wide variety of challenges to make a positive impact in our province.

By recognizing and sharing their stories, the Great Kids Award aims to inspire all young people to go above and beyond to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.

The Great Kids Award has been in existence since 1999.

What you win

Award winners and their families receive:

  • a night's stay at the Fantasyland Hotel
  • passes to West Edmonton Mall attractions
  • a trophy from Children's Services
  • an invitation to attend the awards ceremony with their own special guests
  • a prize from a corporate sponsor at the ceremony

The ceremony is a closed event. Only the winners, their families and special invited guests are able to attend.

If your nominated child does not win, they will still get a letter and certificate in the mail recognizing their efforts.

Eligibility

Eligible nominees

Nominees must be residents of Alberta. Nominators can live outside of Alberta, but the child or youth must have an Alberta address.

16 awards are given to recipients from 4 eligible age groups:

  • ages 5-8
  • ages 9-12
  • ages 13-15
  • ages 16-18

Nominators should be from outside the child’s immediate family, but nominations from family members and parents are accepted.

If the child is outside the age range by the nomination deadline, feel free to nominate them next year.

Ineligible nominees

Children cannot nominate themselves.

Pairs or groups of children cannot be nominated.

Children and youth who do not reside in Alberta cannot be nominated.

How to nominate

To nominate a Great Kid, download and fill out the nomination form or apply online. You will need to take the following steps to fill out the form and complete your nomination package:

Step 1. Gather information

The following information is required for the nominee:

  • name
  • mailing address
  • phone number
  • email address
  • age
  • birthdate

The following information is required for the nominator:

  • name
  • phone number
  • email address

Step 2. Write nominee description

In a separate document, write 1-2 pages on why you think the young person being nominated is a Great Kid. Share the great things they have done or the challenges they have overcome.

Step 3. Gather 2 additional letters of support

Include 2 letters of support from others who know this Great Kid. This can include:

  • teachers
  • classmates
  • coaches
  • community leaders
  • family members

Each letter must be one page long and include the full name and phone number of the individual providing the letter.

If more than 2 letters are submitted, 2 will randomly be selected and the others discarded.

Materials supplied as part of the nomination form will not be returned.

Please do not include photos, news clippings, or any additional materials with your nomination package.

Step 4. Receive permission from a parent or legal guardian

The nominee’s parent or legal guardian must agree to allow their child to be nominated for this award.

Please have the parent or guardian review the content of the nomination and sign the provided statement in the online or paper nomination form.

Step 5. Complete an application

Apply online or complete the rest of the paper nomination form. Online applications and paper copies will be available after the nomination period opens on October 22, 2018.

If you don’t have internet access, please contact the Great Kids Award office to have copies mailed or emailed to you.

Please ensure the address provided is correct and legible.

When applying online or by email, you will receive an email confirming that your nomination was received.

If submitting by mail, you may want to courier your package or pay for a tracking number. Mailed in nominations must be received by the nomination deadline.

Please do not submit a nomination by multiple methods. Choose a reliable method, and then follow up with the Great Kids Award office to ensure it was received.

After you apply

Confirmation of a submission will not be provided unless a nomination is submitted online or by email. To check whether the Great Kids Award team received a nomination package, please call or email the Great Kids Award office.

Recipients of the award are notified directly by phone typically in the spring. Please note that the award ceremony is a closed event. Only the winners, their families and special invited guests are able to attend. After the award ceremony in May, certificates and letters are mailed to all other nominees.

In order to give everyone a fair chance, winners may only receive a Great Kids Award once in their lifetime.
