Overview

To protect our universally accessible, publicly funded health care system, we need to take meaningful action to improve key components of our system.

A new physician compensation agreement with the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) is needed.

As part of the consultations, the Government of Alberta has made 11 proposals to the AMA to help build a stronger and more sustainable health system while managing physician spending growth.

Proposal 3: Driver medical exam for patients 74.5 or older

Today in Alberta, third parties such as automobile insurance providers, employers, government may require medical examinations.

Services required by a third party are not considered an insured service under the Canada Health Act, and the Alberta Health Care Insurance Regulation.

While we recognize the importance of the exams, having these drivers pay for their medical exam will align us with coverage in other provinces.
