“The crop budget calculator helps producers with quick budgeting to estimate the cash cost of producing field crops on their farm,” explains Manglai, production crops economist at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.
“When farmers put all crop production costs together and then calculate break-even price and yield, decisions about selling at a most profitable margin can be made.”
The calculator incorporates:
- break even prices, used to examine the relative profitability and competitiveness of a farm’s enterprises and the development of marketing plans
- break even yields, used to compare new crop or variety potential with current crops
He adds that it’s easier for producers to understand crop production costs when they know their capital, cash flow or profitability.
