Overview

Alberta is now in a general election. Government services remain available but advertising and communications activities are limited to ensure that governments do not involve themselves in or influence the election.

These limitations are outlined in the Elections Communication Policy and apply to:

  • government departments
  • some agencies, boards and commissions and their subsidiaries
  • any other organization whose shares are fully or partially controlled or held in trust for the Government of Alberta, or has a majority of members or directors appointed by the Government of Alberta

These limitations are in place until the end of the election.

What this means

These limitations mean web content and social media updates will be limited to essential matters. In addition, paid advertisements, including print, digital and broadcast, will not run unless they are required by law, required for public health and safety, or meet other criteria defined in the Elections Communications Policy. Other communications activities - such as news releases, statements, town halls and public meetings - will also be limited.

For more information on limitations and certain exemptions, read the Elections Communication Policy.
