Overview
Budget 2024 is a responsible plan to strengthen health care and education, build safe and supportive communities, manage the province’s resources wisely and promote job creation to continue to build Alberta’s competitive advantage. The budget maintains the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and efficient delivery of public services while recognizing and addressing the needs of Alberta’s growing population.
What the budget means for you
Budget 2024 continues to build a refocused health-care system, so every Albertan has access to the care they need, when and where they need it. Supports for education and social services are helping children, families and the vulnerable. Investments in safe, secure communities will increase public safety and protect Albertans and the environment from potential drought, flood and wildfire conditions.
Economic outlook
Alberta’s economic outlook remains strong, even as risks and challenges persist. Real gross domestic product (GDP) growth is forecast to accelerate to 2.9% this year, up from an estimated 2.5% in 2023.
Revenue
While Alberta’s economic prospects remain optimistic, government revenue continues to be volatile. Total revenue is estimated at $73.5 billion in 2024-25, $2.1 billion lower than the 2023-24 third quarter forecast of $75.6 billion. Revenue is forecast to grow by $2.5 billion in 2025-26 and $2.8 billion in 2026-27, reaching $78.8 billion by the end of the forecast period.
Expense
The government continues to apply a prudent and targeted approach to spending, as balanced budgets are an important commitment to current and future Albertans. Operating expense will increase by 3.9% in 2024-25, rising at a modest pace averaging 2.2% over the next 2 years.
Capital Plan
Budget 2024 builds the schools, hospitals and roads Alberta’s communities need today and can rely on as they grow. The 2024 Capital Plan invests $25 billion over 3 years, a $2-billion increase from Budget 2023.
