How to apply
Licensed driving instructors must be employed by a licensed driver training school.
Step 1. Determine eligibility
There are different requirements for each type of driving instructor. Check the requirements to ensure you are eligible to apply for a licence.
Step 2. Submit application package
Complete the Driving Instructor Licence Application (PDF, 109 KB) form and submit it and supporting application documents to MELT and and Licensing Standards (MLS) via email to [email protected]. You must provide a valid email address. Originals of the Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search need to be mailed or delivered to MLS. Print a copy of the Driving Instructor Code of Conduct and Ethics (PDF, 674 kB). Make sure you read and understand the Code of Conduct and Ethics Form before you sign it.
Step 3. Receive an email
You will receive an email notifying you of the result of your application and the next steps.
Step 4. Pass driving instructor knowledge test
Contact MLS to schedule a knowledge test at the Edmonton or Calgary office. You have 2 attempts to pass the test. If you are unsuccessful after 2 attempts, you must wait one year to reapply.
Step 5. Pass driving instructor practical test
Contact MLS to schedule a practical test at the Edmonton or Calgary office. You have 2 attempts to pass the test. If you are unsuccessful after 2 attempts, you must wait one year to reapply.
Step 6. Pay the licence fee
Pay the instructor licence fee (if applicable) at any Alberta registry agent, plus applicable service charges and GST, at any Alberta registry agent office upon successful completion of all training and testing. Proof of payment must be submitted prior to a licence being issued.
Step 7. Receive email
If successful, you will receive a confirmation email and you will be mailed your driving instructor licence.
