Overview

Alberta Transportation licenses driving instructors under the Driver Training and Driver Examination Regulation of the Traffic Safety Act.

Licensed driving instructors must be employed by a licensed driver training school.

Starting March 1, 2019, all driver training providers including those that do not charge a fee and all driving instructors (including senior driving instructors) will require the same type of licence to provide driver training. All existing licensed and certified instructors must reapply for a new licence.

How to apply

Step 1. Determine eligibility

There are different requirements for each type of driving instructor. Check the requirements to ensure you are eligible to apply for a licence.

Step 2. Submit application package

Complete the Driving Instructor Licence Application (PDF, 109 KB) form and submit it and supporting application documents to MELT and and Licensing Standards (MLS) via email to [email protected]. You must provide a valid email address. Originals of the Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search need to be mailed or delivered to MLS. Print a copy of the Driving Instructor Code of Conduct and Ethics (PDF, 674 kB). Make sure you read and understand the Code of Conduct and Ethics Form before you sign it.

Step 3. Receive an email

You will receive an email notifying you of the result of your application and the next steps.

Step 4. Pass driving instructor knowledge test

Contact MLS to schedule a knowledge test at the Edmonton or Calgary office. You have 2 attempts to pass the test. If you are unsuccessful after 2 attempts, you must wait one year to reapply.

Step 5. Pass driving instructor practical test

Contact MLS to schedule a practical test at the Edmonton or Calgary office. You have 2 attempts to pass the test. If you are unsuccessful after 2 attempts, you must wait one year to reapply.

Step 6. Pay the licence fee

Pay the instructor licence fee (if applicable) at any Alberta registry agent, plus applicable service charges and GST, at any Alberta registry agent office upon successful completion of all training and testing. Proof of payment must be submitted prior to a licence being issued.

Step 7. Receive email

If successful, you will receive a confirmation email and you will be mailed your driving instructor licence.
