“Artificial Intelligence is no longer about future technologies – it is here and being applied right now,” says Ron Lyons, value-added financial specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

“Fertility and insect monitoring in greenhouses are two examples of AI projects in the greenhouse industry at this time. Hog carcass splitting and berry and vegetable sorting are examples of robotics and machine learning being used in food processing.”

A cluster of machine learning, natural language processing and robotics representatives from AI commercialization companies reside in Edmonton. Their representatives would like to meet with and tour one or more large scale food processing, greenhouse, packaging and distribution co-ops or companies in the province.

“The meeting and tour would be to learn about the business and production challenges food processors, food distributors and greenhouses face over the course of a year. The meeting would be a learn-learn meeting, not a sales meeting.”
