“It’s been almost a month since the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision in R v Bissonnette and Justin Trudeau’s government has done nothing to protect Canadians.
“In Alberta, we are starting to see cases identified for review as a result of this decision.
“We reiterate our calls for the federal government, and in particular Justice Minister David Lametti, to immediately amend the Criminal Code to strengthen sentencing against mass murderers.
“The Supreme Court decision struck down a reform passed by the Harper government that provided judges with the discretion to require 25-year blocks of parole ineligibility when someone has committed multiple first-degree murders.
“Only the federal government can fix this matter.
“Once again, Alberta calls on the federal government to invoke the notwithstanding clause and restore parole ineligibility for mass murderers.”
